Meet: Wayne Thomas

A 53 year old from Radcliffe has gained new confidence and a new job after sourcing a work placement through Steps To Success (S2S).

Wayne Thomas, who is profoundly deaf but a proficient lip reader, was unemployed for almost two years. He heard about S2S through one of Six Town Housing’s Community Development Workers (CDW) and registered his interest online.

Wayne attended one of their free accredited First Aid courses and a free 5 day Positive Steps course in Radcliffe, which provides tailored support to those who might need a confidence boost or employment related skills. Wayne also received support from his CDW to help improve his CV.

Following his interest and enthusiasm, Wayne was offered a work placement with Six Town Housing’s Caretaking team for 4 weeks and he was complimented by their tenants on the standard of his work after only a few days working there.

Wayne’s caretaking placement was followed by a further 2 week work placement for Bury Council at one of their storage depots.

The skills and knowledge Wayne picked up from both work placements gave him the experience needed to successfully apply for an Environmental Cleaner role at Six Town Housing.

Wayne said, “I feel that S2S has helped me a lot. I have come a long way since I joined up and it has made me feel a lot more confident in myself.”

Claire Rogan, S2S Project Advisor said, “Wayne has proved himself to be a determined individual, who put everything into his work placements. His feedback was glowing and the skills he gained have clearly helped him to achieve his new role as an Environmental Cleaner. I wish him all the best, he deserves it!”
